What is a Talent Scout?
A talent scout finds and recruits people to help them get their start in the entertainment industry Sometimes the scout will be involved in coaching and developing the talent, and getting them in front of the agents and managers who will book them for work.
They often work as independent scouts, or may have their own training center. You could say that talent scouts are head hunters for the entertainment industry.
What’s it like to be a Talent Scout?
The day-to-day can be very different. If there’s one thing for sure, a talent scout must be a people person. Finding talent means attending plays, dance and sing recitals, even looking in places like malls, expos, or other events where young people congregate.
How do you become a talent scout?
Becoming a talent scout means spending some time with an existing training center staff or working with an independent scout. At iPOP, all of our members and member companies are essentially talent scouts. Most of them have a training center or studio. Some of them have “brick and mortar” offices, while others conduct searches online. At certain times they audition their existing clientele to see who would be good candidates to attend iPOP! The members receive the benefit of exposing their talent to otherwise unreachable industry VIPs in acting, modeling, and music. These success stories are what continue to make their training studios even more successful.
Is pursuing a career as a Talent Scout right for you?
This job is certainly for the self-motivated and assertive. Hollywood is no joke.
You might be wondering: How do talent scouts get paid? If you provide services, or work for a training center, you usually receive commission based on the preparation programs a talent needs to sign up for. (Such as training, photoshoots, etc)
Scouts can make up to $5,000 a week – but their pay all depends on finding great talent. Sometimes travel and hotel stays are involved, especially on weekends.
What kind of experience is helpful in being a successful talent scout?
While a formal education is no pre-requisite to becoming a scout, there are some areas of experience that can be very helpful. Without a doubt, you should be familiar with the acting and modeling industries, and have a passion for helping people achieve their dreams. Experience that includes leadership or management roles, or sales experience are very useful! You must have a great professional image, positive attitude, desire to help others, assertive and confident personality, and not be afraid to talk to people.
